And he received them at their hand, and fashioned it with a graving tool, after he had made it a molten calf: and they said, These be thy gods, O Israel, which brought thee up out of the land of Egypt." - Exodus 32:3-4
Welcome to today’s devotion! Unfortunately it opens with a really bad day for Israel. Moses is away getting commands from God, and the people get a little impatient and crazy. Thinking that Moses is dead, they grab all their gold earrings and take them to Aaron. Then, Aaron starts to turn them into a golden calf. After the calf is finished the people claim that the golden calf is God! Long story short, God gets really unhappy and they have to make some golden calf powder and drink it. But how does this apply to us? It actually does in 2 really big ways. 1. While most of us don’t worship actual idols, things can become our idols really easily. Anything that we put in higher priority than God becomes an idol. Sports, money, trends, or really anything can become and idol. 2. The worst thing that the Israelites did in this passage, was say that the calf was God. It wasn’t just a god to them. They thought it was the real God. They wanted to worship God through an idol which is not how God wants to be worshipped. Do we worship God how he wants to be worshipped, or how He wants to be worshipped? Do we give him our best when we worship him? Or do we just shrug and think “At least I’m worshipping. I’m putting in my time.”? It can be so easy to worship how we want to, or just worship to make ourselves feel good. But we really need to think about what God wants. It will please him a lot more. I hope this verse is inspiring to you. Keep God at the head of your life and he will bless you. -B
